Portland, Maine is the largest city in the state of Maine, located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The city has a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was first settled by the English. We stopped by Portland on our way back to Boston from Acadia National park. With no particular plan in mind, we just wondered around, walked to Old Port, strolled trough the promenade, stopped by for local beer and headed to Boston. Here are some suggestions on what to do in Portland for your half day stay.
History of Portland
In the early days of settlement, Portland was known as Falmouth, and was a bustling port town with a thriving fishing industry. However, in 1775, during the American Revolution, the town was burned to the ground by the British Navy in retaliation for American privateers capturing British ships.
After the war, the town was rebuilt and renamed Portland, and became a center for trade and commerce, with ships arriving from all over the world to exchange goods. In the mid-19th century, Portland became a major port for the shipping of ice, which was harvested from nearby lakes and sent to warmer climates around the world.
During the Civil War, Portland played an important role as a supply center for the Union Army, and in the years following the war, the city continued to grow and prosper. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Portland became a hub for manufacturing, with industries ranging from textiles to shipbuilding.
Today, Portland is a thriving city with a rich cultural heritage, and is known for its beautiful architecture, thriving arts scene, and excellent restaurants. It continues to be an important center for trade and commerce, with a bustling port that serves as a gateway to the rest of the world.
