Utah is a hiking paradise, but it is also well known know for its dinosaur tracks, with hundreds of sites throughout the state. Why there is so many dinosaur tracks in Utah?
Utah is known for having a high concentration of dinosaur tracks due to its unique geological history. Approximately 150 million years ago, during the Jurassic period, the area that is now Utah was covered by a shallow sea. Over time, layers of sediment were deposited on the sea floor and eventually solidified into rock. As the sea retreated, the land dried out and dinosaurs began to roam the area. These dinosaurs left their footprints in the soft, muddy ground, which were then preserved by subsequent layers of sediment. Millions of years later, erosion and other geological processes exposed these tracks, allowing researchers to study and learn from them today. Utah’s dry climate has also helped to preserve the tracks, making it a prime location for dinosaur track discoveries.
Where to find dinosaur tracks in Utah
Dinosaur National Monument
Dinosaur National Monument is a vast park located on the Utah-Colorado border. There are several areas within the park where dinosaur fossils and tracks can be seen, but one of the most popular sites is the Quarry Exhibit Hall. This is where visitors can see over 1,500 dinosaur fossils, including the remains of Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Diplodocus. The Quarry Exhibit Hall is located about 20 miles east of Vernal, Utah, and can be reached by taking Highway 40 to the town of Jensen. From there, follow the signs to the park entrance. Mill Canyon
Mill Canyon is located near the town of Moab, Utah, and is home to several dinosaur tracks. The tracks were left by a variety of dinosaurs, including sauropods and theropods. To get to Mill Canyon, take Highway 191 south from Moab for about 20 miles. Turn right onto Mill Canyon Road and follow it for about 6 miles until you reach the dinosaur track site. There is a small parking area and a short trail that leads to the tracks.
Potash Road Dino Tracks
The Potash Road Dino Tracks are located near Moab, Utah, and are easily accessible from Highway 279, also known as Potash Road. To get there, take Highway 191 south from Moab for about 4 miles, then turn left onto Potash Road. Follow Potash Road for about 15 miles until you reach the dinosaur track site. There is a small parking area and a short trail that leads to the tracks, which were left by a variety of dinosaurs, including sauropods and theropods.
Dyno Cliffs Dinosaur Tracks
The Dyno Cliffs Dinosaur Tracks are located in the San Rafael Swell area of central Utah. To get there, take I-70 to the town of Green River, then take exit 147 and head south on Highway 24 for about 24 miles. Turn right onto Temple Mountain Road and follow it for about 8 miles until you reach the dinosaur track site. The tracks were left by a variety of dinosaurs, including sauropods and theropods. There is a small parking area and a short trail that leads to the tracks. Note that the road to the site can be rough and may require a high-clearance vehicle.
