With a tragic legend behind it, Alley of Kiss (El Callejon del Beso) is one of the most popular attractions in Guanajuato. I didn’t care much about the love story behind the legend and just wanted to see the narrow street with two balconies close enough for two people to kiss. So, here is my practical guide for the fist-time visitors on how to kiss on the Alley of Kiss in Guanajuato.
The Alley of Kiss legend
The legend (or a true story) behind the Alley of Kiss is, of course, heartbreaking love story. A girl from a rich miner family and a boy from a poor miner family fell in love, and kissed every night standing on different balconies, but the girl’s father… Can you guess the end of the love story?
Yes, of course, the girl’s father was against the teens love and asked them to stop seeing each other, but the teens did not listen. The father stabbed the girl. The boy jumped from the balcony and killed himself. There is also a version stating that the father killed both. The legend has tons of details and variations, but at the end both teens were dead. Well, you got an idea.
So, my takeaway is: the path to the survival is to listen to your dad and do what he says
Where is the Alley of Kiss located
The alley of Kiss located near the Plaza de Los Angeles, about 5-7 minutes’ walk from the Basilica.
Best time to visit Alley of Kiss
The place is super touristy and crowded. So, the best time to visit the alley just to see and photograph the balconies (not people kissing) during the weekends is early morning or late at night. I’ve heard from locals that it is less crowded during the weekdays, but I still suggest getting there early in the morning.
If you are visiting during the weekend and kissing there is a must-do for you, plan to arrive to the alley around 9 am when shop on both side of the street open.
What to expect when visiting Alley of Kiss?
The most important thing to have when planning a visit to Alley of Kiss is the person you want to kiss the right expectations. I have been imagining super romantic narrow quiet street with close balconies and hopefully a couple kissing on the balconies. Well, I was wrong, except for the fact that there were a lot of couples standing in line to kiss.
So, this is how the Alley of Kiss looks like Sunday early afternoon.
How to kiss on the Alley of Kiss in Guanajuato
Kiss on the balconies.
There are two gift shops that own two balconies from the both sides of the street. You have an option to pay money to kiss or to buy a souvenir from the store and kiss for free.
The price for kissing on the balcony is 20 Mexican dollars for guys and 30 Mexican Dollars for girls. It is supers cheap, less than $2, but…..“How Unfair!! “said my inner feminist.
So, pay the money (or buy souvenirs) get up the stairs, wait in line and kiss. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of people to take your picture including the store employees and tourists like you.
If you just want to get on the balcony and don’t want to kiss, the entry is free. Also, unfair
Important: the steps on Ana’s balcony are super steep and there is no handle on the top, so be careful.
My takeaway: It’s cheaper to kiss for two gays than for two lesbians.
Kiss on the steps below the balcony.
Kissing under the balcony is free, but you will need to wait in line about 10 minutes (or more if the tours are there)
You need to make sure to stand on the step three when kissing your loved one. In case you forget, the step is painted red. If the couple kiss on step three under the balcony, the couple guaranteed to stay together 7 years(or 10 years). I’ve heard both when I was standing near the souvenir shop and listening for two tour guides talking simultaneously to their groups. The average is 8.5
So, if you want to stay with the person for 7-10 years and still have a romantic photo kissing on the balconies, you will need to kiss twice (on the balconies and under the balconies, on the red step). Plan your time accordingly.
Final thoughts.
Alley of Kisses is a colorful very narrow street that totally worth visiting if you are in the area(with the right expectations). Now you know how to kiss on the Alley of Kiss in Guanajuato. So, Happy Kissing!
